Penang funicular rail service shut for maintenance

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill funicular train service has ground to a halt and it could be out for several months. The popular train service was closed for maintenance work from 4pm yesterday. Railway services authorities announced the closure was for an undetermined period.

When contacted, the Chief Minister’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik said the service would not be resumed for several months.

“Local visitors and tourists will now have to take a jeep or hike up to the hilltop,” Ng said, adding that the use of personal jeeps on Penang Hill would be looked into.
